Overcoming Life Crisis - Shiatsu for Emotional Problems

Whether it's separation, job loss, or bereavement - life crises can deeply shake us and turn our entire lives upside down. A life crisis after a separation is a particularly challenging experience.

Instead of fighting against the overwhelm, Shiatsu can be a way to deal with such upheavals on a physical level and emerge stronger from them. Here you'll learn how Shiatsu can support you with emotional problems.

New Beginnings and Overcoming Life Crises

Life crises are inevitable.

They can push us to perceived limits and tear us away from the familiar. Yet they also hold the opportunity for purification and new beginnings.

Shiatsu is like a comforting hand that accompanies and supports you on your journey through these turbulent times.

You're wondering what Shiatsu is? Here you'll find a good overview of the effects and process of a Shiatsu treatment.

Why Crises Can Be Important

Even though an acute life crisis is painful, it serves growth. It confronts us with parts of ourselves that we might have suppressed.

And it can show what really matters in life.

A crisis forces us to question old habits and beliefs. It's an opportunity to shed ballast and create space for something new. Often, it opens our eyes to new perspectives and possibilities.

"We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us."

Shiatsu for Emotional Problems

Shiatsu is more than a relaxing massage - it's a way to bring body, mind, and soul into harmony. This holistic approach makes Shiatsu a valuable companion during periods of change.

In my practice as a Shiatsu practitioner, I have had good experiences with Shiatsu in crisis situations and for emotional problems. Especially in conjunction with psychotherapeutic treatment, Shiatsu can be a good help during life crises.

The mindful touch and energetic alignment of Shiatsu can provide stability and orientation. Through Shiatsu, we experience a powerful inner cleansing that shows us new ways to emerge from the crisis.

The Shiatsu Path of Balance

Shiatsu views crises as expressions of energetic imbalances.

Life crisis balance from current state to potential
Life crisis: Between current state and potential

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, crises signify an imbalance between a person's current state and their potential. Shiatsu is like a bridge that helps us overcome the gap between our present condition and our true potential.

Crises arise when past experiences and adopted beliefs block the view of our own possibilities.

By restoring harmony between the "is" and the "potential," Shiatsu helps make crises easier to navigate.

The Process of Purification and Renewal

Shiatsu supports the process of purification and renewal in three ways:

  • Releasing emotional baggage and old patterns through gentle touch
  • Stimulating energy flow to dissolve blockages
  • Directing the gaze inward to rediscover one's own center

A Shiatsu treatment accompanies us mindfully through the various phases of change. It provides orientation when the familiar falls away and paves the way forward.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) describes four phases of change to overcome a life crisis:

  1. Purification - Releasing the old
  2. At the beginning of a change, it's important to let go of baggage and create space for the new. Shiatsu helps to dissolve old blockages and patterns. A Shiatsu massage frees the flow of life energy and cleanses body and mind.

  3. Clarification - Turning the gaze inward
  4. When external structures become fragile, we find clarity in stillness. Shiatsu directs focus inward, away from the outside. From this calmness emerges a clearer picture of one's own needs and goals.

  5. Growth - Integrating the new
  6. Shiatsu helps in this phase to become creative, develop visions, and find and nurture the seeds of the future within oneself. This allows the new to be integrated and growth to be released.

  7. Integration - Reconciling with the new situation
  8. Once the storm has subsided, it's time to process what has been experienced and reconcile with the new. Shiatsu is a harmonizing embrace for body, mind, and soul that helps us find our way back to our true essence.

Frequently Asked Questions about Shiatsu Massages in Life Crises (FAQ)

What specific techniques do you use in Shiatsu to support me with emotional problems?

During a Shiatsu treatment in a life crisis, I like to use these techniques:

  • Meridian work:
I focus on specific meridians associated with emotional processing and stress reduction. Through gentle pressure along these energy pathways, a deep sense of relaxation and emotional balance can be promoted.

  • Breathing techniques:
I like to use breathing exercises to strengthen awareness of one's own body and calm the mind. These techniques can be particularly helpful in reducing anxiety and stress in times of crisis.

  • Joint rotations and stretches:
Stretches in joints help to release physical tensions that often accompany emotional burdens. They improve mobility and promote a feeling of lightness and well-being.

  • Hara (abdomen) massage:
The abdominal area, known in Shiatsu as Hara, is considered the center of energy and emotions. A gentle massage of this area can bring profound emotional relief and contribute to inner balance.

  • Sound and vibration work:
In my Shiatsu treatments, I also like to use singing bowls and a gong to achieve a deeper level of relaxation and support the emotional healing process.

Is Shiatsu safe and are there side effects?

Shiatsu massage is generally considered a safe treatment method. It is a non-invasive therapy that does not use medications or devices. Occasionally, fatigue or emotional sensitivity may occur after a session, which is viewed as a normal part of the healing process. However, as with any form of therapy, you should consult your doctor before beginning Shiatsu treatment.

How long does a Shiatsu session last and how many sessions are recommended?

A typical Shiatsu session usually lasts about 60 minutes. The number of recommended sessions varies depending on individual needs and the specific circumstances of the life crisis. Some clients feel an improvement after just one session, while others benefit from regular sessions over several months.

How Else You Can Support Change and Renewal

Shiatsu can facilitate your change and renewal in times of transition. In addition, there are some things in your lifestyle that promote the process of renewal:

  • Take enough time for yourself, including doing nothing
  • Give yourself space for grief, anger, and other emotions
  • Spend plenty of time in nature
  • Conscious nutrition and light exercise
  • Meditation to find your inner center
  • A good social network that provides support

"In 2021 I had a serious car accident and have been struggling with chronic back pain ever since. Medication and physiotherapy only brought short-term relief. It was a real hole I fell into. Shiatsu was my last hope, and it really worked wonders.

The pain has become much more bearable, and I feel overall more mobile and relaxed. I am so grateful that I discovered Shiatsu and that Peter now accompanies me."
